Leisure Activities And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Optimal Enjoyment

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

To make the most out of your later years in life, be sure to participate in leisure activities  that you enjoy and be sure to practice senior balance exercises so you can enjoy those activities safely. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In fact, medical researchers have found a direct positive correlation between participating in fun activities and reports of greater enjoyment in life. To be specific, engaging in your favorite activities can be fun or relaxing, but did you know that doing what you like to do may actually be good for your health? It’s true. According to data provided by medical researchers, people who are sociable, generous, and goal-oriented report higher levels of happiness and lower levels of depression than other people. Research from other studies supports this observation. People who are involved in hobbies and social and leisure activities may be at lower risk for some health problems. For example, one study followed participants for up to 21 years and linked leisure activities, like reading, playing board games, playing musical instruments, and dancing, with a lower risk for dementia. In another study, older adults who participated in social activities (i.e., played games, belonged to social groups, attended local events, travelled) or productive activities (i.e., had paid or unpaid jobs, cooked, gardened) lived longer than people who did not report taking part in these types of activities. Leisure activities that combine a component of fitness also provide excellent health benefits. As an example, older adults who enjoy a walk with a spouse or a friend tend to ne more healthy. To be safe on your walk or during other leisure events, be sure to perform senior balance exercises first to develop adequate steadiness.

Senior Balance Exercises For Healthy Leisure Activities

To make the most of your day, try rehearsing senior balance exercises to prepare your balance abilities for all leisure events. As an example, you can walk along a line in a heel to toe fashion to establish necessary steadiness for walking with a friend or a spouse on a golf path or hiking trail. You can learn which senior balance exercise to perform and how to accomplish each one by watching and joining in with the direction of a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Heart Failure And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Heart Recovery

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

For those folks who have gone through the experience of heart failure, medical researchers recommend that physical fitness including senior balance exercises should be part of the recovery process. Please see more information at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers are saying that all patients, including those who have experienced heart failure, respond well to exercise. After a bout with heart failure, exercise may well be the last thing on your mind. But, maybe you should think again. A new study finds exercise extends life even for patients with heart failure. The analysis in more than 4000 patients showed a mortality benefit from exercise regardless of heart failure severity, age and gender. “Patients with heart failure should not be scared of exercise damaging them or killing them,” said principal investigator Professor Rod Taylor, chair of health services research and director of the Exeter Clinical Trials Unit at the University of Exeter Medical School in Exeter, United Kingdom.  “The message for heart failure patients is clear. Exercise is good for you, it will make you feel better, and it could potentially make you live longer.” The investigators found that exercise was associated with an 18% lower risk of all-cause mortality and an 11% reduced risk of hospitalization compared with no exercise.  Professor Taylor said, “This analysis did in fact show that there is a mortality benefit from doing exercise. In other words, patients who exercised had a lower risk of death than those who didn’t.” Before starting an exercise program that includes walking, biking or other fitness routines, medical researchers as well as medical health professionals recommend practicing senior balance exercises to establish necessary stability for your movement activities.

Risk Predictors And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises To Limit Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Medical researchers have looked at which factors are predictive of falls in older adults and how performing senior balance exercises can help limit the potential of a fall. Please see more information at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have shown that one in three aging individuals fall each year. Unfortunately, while any older person can fall, there are certain conditions or situations putting elders at higher risk. These include:
•    Feeling unsteady or losing balance. This may be an early indication of a medical condition and/or medication side effect that requires looking into.
•    Difficulty walking and holding on to furniture or walls for support. This may indicate a problem with the balance system, the nervous system or weak leg muscles.
•    Difficulty getting up from a chair or sofa. This may be a sign of weak muscles, dizziness or other medical conditions.
•    Changes in vision. Seeing correctly is important in avoiding trips and slips.
•    Becoming easily confused. Thinking correctly can interfere with safe mobility (knowing the difference between safe versus hazardous environmental conditions and/or activities).
For older adults, the greater the number of physical and mental risk factors to which an individual is exposed, the greater the probability of a fall, and the more likely the results of the fall will threaten the person’s independence. Often, persons with multiple falls struggle with their mobility and ability to accomplish daily activities. This downward spiral of immobility and dependence can be limited by practicing senior balance exercises every day.

Senior Balance Exercises Minimize Falls

To reduce the possibility of a fall it is essential to recognize the factors that could lead to a fall as well as to rehearse specific senior balance exercises to physically avoid falling. As an example, you can realize that it is critical to hold onto a handrail when going up and down stairs to prevent slipping or tripping on the stairs and falling. You can learn these and other safety tips as well as which senior balance exercises to perform by following along with the instruction from a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Mobility Challenges And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Needed Stability

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

As we get older, our need to be steady on our feet is so much more important to help avoid falls and injuries from falls and can be positively effected by practicing senior balance exercises every day. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In our later years, we experience natural declines in leg strength and ankle flexibility, which can lead to falls. Other challenges to our balance abilities include a decreasing visual acuity and less definitive sensory input from our feet to the balance center in the brain. As a result, our overall stability declines and risk for falling increases. Here are a few tips to lessen the likelihood for falling:
o    Look out for tripping hazards within the home: Throw rugs are often the cause of tripping and falling.  These small rugs often get in the way of walkers and wheelchairs and are some of the first things we encourage our seniors to let go of. Now is also a good time to eliminate anything that may be piling up on the floor, including papers and newspapers. Coffee tables can also be tripping hazards if they are blocking the path is getting in and out of a chair.
o    Make wider pathways: Older adults may need more space to get by with her new walker (likely about 36” or more).  Evaluate furniture arrangements and see if anything needs to go to make more room for seniors to get around.
o    Set up a “command center”: If need be (for example, while healing from an injury or surgery) an older adult may have a favorite chair, recliner, or lift chair where they will be spending most of their time throughout the day.  Help them set it up so that many of their basic needs are within an arm’s reach. You may want to help them make a space for her television remotes, reading materials, her telephone, calendar, tissues, mail, wastebasket, and maybe even medications. Television trays are also handy for meals.
Be sure to also encourage the older person to practice senior balance exercises to maintain as much stability as possible.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fall Prevention

To minimize the possibility of a fall, you can safety proof your house as well as practice  senior balance exercises for better overall stabilization. Rehearsing steadiness routines is more effective if you do it on a regular basis. That is why a skilled Physical Therapist developed a program of senior balance exercises in the Exercise For Balance DVD that you can use as part of a daily routine.

Brain Connections And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Strong Brains

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Having a sharp and active mind in later years is an important goal for older adults and physical fitness including senior balance exercises can help meet that aim. Please see more at http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now A new study of older adults, presented in NeuroImage, finds the stronger your aerobic endurance, the stronger your brain connection and probably your long-term brain function as you age. Greater physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness are firmly associated with reduced age-related cognitive decline and lower risk for dementia. However, significant gaps remain in the understanding of how physical activity and fitness protect the brain from adverse effects of brain aging.  The primary goal of the current study was to empirically evaluate the independent relationships between physical activity and fitness with functional brain health among healthy older adults, as measured by the functional connectivity of cognitively and clinically relevant resting state networks. This study shows that age-related differences in brain health – specifically the strength of connections between different regions of the brain – vary with fitness level in older adults. Michelle Voss led the study while a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois with Beckman Institute director Arthur Kramer and kinesiology and community health professor Edward McAuley. Voss now is an assistant professor at the University of Iowa. “Our study provides the strongest evidence to date that fitness in an older adult population can have substantial benefits to brain health in terms of the functional connections of different regions of the brain,” Kramer said. To be safe with exercise regimes like walking, biking and tennis, older adults are encouraged first to develop strong balance abilities by practicing senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Brain Health

Keeping cognitive function as strong as possible for as long as possible is a critical goal for aging individuals and participating in fitness programs including senior balance exercises is one of the best methods to accomplish that goal. Equilibrium routines can include activities like tandem walking or tandem standing. Bone Failure And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises To Decrease Fractures

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Avoiding falls that produce fractures in older adults is one of the main goals of practicing senior balance exercises as part of a daily routine. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now One of the more common injuries that occurs with a fall is spinal fractures. Spinal fractures occur more often as individuals age. As far as age-related fractures are concerned, spine fractures are the most common and can affect up to 25 percent of all postmenopausal women in he United States. By the age of eighty, forty percent of women and twenty percent of men can experience a spinal fracture. Spinal fractures leave the individual with nagging back pain, stooped posture and greater immobility. These side effects of spine fractures can further increase the risk of falling and experiencing additional injuries. As a result, medical professionals like doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists recommend that aging individuals regularly perform senior balance exercises to enhance their overall stability and limit the potential of a fall.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fall Reduction

To limit the possibility of a fall and sustaining a spinal fracture, older adults are encouraged to perform senior balance exercises every day. As an example, you can rehearse an equilibrium routine where you stand on one foot and move the other foot up and forwards, mimicking taking a step up onto a stair. This combination of a static and dynamic steadiness routine can be performed three times on each leg and can help avoid tripping or falling on stairs or curbs. You can learn how to rehearse this senior balance exercise and other steadiness routines as well as safety tips to keep from falling by joining in with the instruction from a knowledgeably Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

The Aging Brain And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For The Aging Brain

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

In our later years, we experience changes in our body and mind which require us to consider participating in senior balance exercises to help us stay steady and reduce the likelihood of a fall. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now As the years go by, we may notice changes in our body and mind like a decrease in vision, hearing, muscle strength, sleep patterns and digestion. some of these factors can contribute to decreased mobility and a greater risk for falling. Medical researchers have looked at the aging brain and found some interesting patterns. As an example, when neuroscientists study the aging brain they notice that there are shifts in two types of intelligence. One called fluid intelligencethe speed at which we learn and the speed at which we react. The elements of fluid intelligence can  include focus, concentration and speed. The other type of intelligence is called  ‘crystallized’ intelligence or perhaps wisdom. It is intelligence that is only gained with experience. Crystalized intelligence increases rather than decreases with age. It results from storing life experiences and the knowledge and memory that comes with it. We can combine the ideas of fluid intelligence with Crystallized intelligence to determine that it is essential for older adults to practice certain senior balance exercises as they get older to limit the potential of a fall.

Practice Senior Balance Exercises To Prevent Falls

With the wisdom of the ages and recognition that body strength and reactions are slowing down, many older adults are realizing their need to perform senior balance exercises to decrease their risk for falling.  Many of us can retell stories of loved ones, neighbors or friends of friends who have fallen and hurt themselves. Additionally, as the years pass, it is recognizable that ones feet are not as agile with movements or it is more difficult to remain steady while walking on soft carpet or grass. With that in mind, the recommendation from healthcare providers, family and friends is for those in the aging population to rehearse equilibrium routines every day to maximize balance abilities and minimize fall possibilities. Steadiness exercises can be as simple as standing on one foot near a counter or table.  This stability exercise as well as a step by step demonstration of other senior balance exercises can be performed in the convenience of your own home by following the instruction on an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Irregular Heartbeat And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Arrhythmias

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Older adults who suffer with irregular heartbeats are encouraged to practice simple physical fitness activities preceded by senior balance exercises. Please see more at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have provided new information in Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, an American Heart Association journal. The researchers have shown that when older people develop atrial fibrillation — the most common type of irregular heartbeat — it accelerates age-related declines in walking speed, strength, balance and other aspects of physical performance. “Particularly in older adults, we need to be mindful that the effects of atrial fibrillation  go beyond increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. We learned from this study that older adults with atrial fibrillation are especially vulnerable to losing strength, balance, gait speed and coordination,” said Jared W. Magnani, M.D., Ms.C., lead author of the study and assistant professor of medicine at Boston University. In atrial fibrillation, the heart’s two small upper chambers (atria) beat irregularly and too fast, which may increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and other conditions. The risk rises with age and can lead to other issues like imbalance and a greater risk for falling. As a result, medical researchers as well as doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists recommend that those in the aging population with heart conditions practice certain physical fitness routines and specific senior balance exercises to stay steady during heart healthy activities.

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Heart Healthy Routines

By incorporating senior balance exercises with heart healthy fitness routines, older individuals can workout safely. as an example, senior citizens can practice tandem walking, where they walk along a line in a heel to toe fashion, to help build strong balance reactions at their feet and ankles. With strong and fast balance reactions, older adults will be able to recover from any poor footing or slipping when they are out on a brisk walk, which is recommended for good heart health. You can learn how to perform tandem walking and other senior balance exercises by following the instructions in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Summer Concerts With Senior Balance Exercises

Enjoy Summer Fun With Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

With the warm Summer days upon us, it is time to practice senior balance exercises to enjoy outdoor activities safely and without risk of falling.  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  One of the great joys of Summer is taking in a wonderful outdoor concert, whether it is live jazz, a string quartet or a big band reduction of the Boston Pops. Additionally, the Fourth of July is just around the corner and it will be time to listen to the famous 1812 Overature on a grassy lawn with fireworks and accompanying crowds. To stay safe and avoid falling with crowded venues or with trying to navigate grassy areas, it is recommended by healthcare professionals like doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists to practice specific senior balance exercises to maximize your footing and reduce the risk of a potential fall and injury from a fall.

Senior Balance Exercises For Summer Concerts

Participating in daily senior balance exercises will enable you to develop strong and fast balance reactions that will help you adapt to the challenges presented by concert going. Getting to the concert may involve walking on narrow pathways. To boost your steadiness getting through narrow places, you can perform a tandem stance routine where you stand with your feet in a line, touching heel to toe. This tandem stance position will increase the speed and strength of your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. Furthermore, to be able to walk on uneven grass, first rehearse single leg standing exercises where you stand on one foot at a time, which increases overall stability with all movement activities. You can learn how to rehearse a series of senior balance exercises that will advance your steadiness abilities by joining in with the instruction from a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Endurance Events And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For The Long Haul

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Older adults sometimes battle with feelings of fatigue, shortness of breath, weakness and immobility which can be helped by participating in fitness regimes that include cardiovascular programs and  senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Medical researchers have found that different types of exercise programs can be a significant benefit for those in the aging population. As an example, endurance exercises — activities that increase your breathing and heart rate — such as dancing, walking, swimming, or bicycling, increase your stamina and improve the health of your lungs and circulatory system as well as your heart. There are many ways to be generally active or to participate in fitness activities. You can be active in short spurts throughout the day or you can set aside specific times of the day or specific days of the week to exercise. Many physical activities, such as brisk walking or raking leaves, are free or low-cost and do not require special equipment. Other endurance event ideas include riding a bike, playing tennis, jogging or skiing. One important aspect before you start an endurance program is to perform specific senior balance exercises to establish the needed steadiness for your activity.

Senior Balance Exercises For Endurance Events

before you begin an endurance activity, it is essential to rehearse senior balance exercises to build adequate stability. as an example, before starting on a brisk walk, you can practice tandem walking where you walk in a narrow base of support along a line. Walking heel to toe along a line will develop strong balance reactions at the feet and ankles, preparing you for outdoor, brisk walking. You can learn how to do tandem walking and other senior balance exercises by joining in with a knowledgeable Physical Therapist as she explains in detail these equilibrium routines on the Exercise For Balance DVD.
