The Cha Cha And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Latin Dancing

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Many older adults love to dance, but before doing the Cha Cha they should practice senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Social dancing is choke full of wonderful benefits for those in the aging population. Folks who participate in dancing reap numerous rewards such as:
-Increased cardiovascular health
-Increased lung capacity
– Increased coordination with the lower extremities
-Elevated mood
-Increased leg strength
-Enhanced social interaction and sense of community -Increased balance and agility
In particular, there are several Latin dances that promote health and well being as well as balance and coordination. As an example, older folks who engage in Latin dance styles including merengue, bachata, cha cha cha and salsa can work on their dance moves and steadiness in these complex choreography dances. Medical researchers have found that those in the aging population who participate in dancing experience a fun way to engage in physical activity. Priscilla Vásquez, M.P.H.,at the University of Illinois at Chicago did a study on Latin dancing for older adults. She found that “This program (of Latin dancing)engaged them on many levels, physically, culturally and emotionally. Anecdotally, I’ve heard participants say attending dance class is their stress relief. They also interact with others and build community. This impacts their physical as well as emotional health and wellbeing.” Medical researchers as well as healthcare providers encourage older individuals who are participating in a dance program to start their rehearsals with senior balance exercises to build a foundation of strong stability before initiating a dance routine.

Senior Balance Exercises For Dancing

Before putting on your dancing shoes, older adults are advised to perform specific senior balance exercises to develop necessary stability for all dancing moves. One such equilibrium routine that you can practice before hitting the ballroom involves standing on one foot for twenty seconds three times in a row, followed by standing on the other foot for twenty seconds three times in a row. You can advance your steadiness routines to include dynamic stability exercises. One such dynamic steadiness routine involves walking along a line touching One heel to the toes of the other foot. This tandem walking routine will develop strong balance reactions at your feet and ankles which is necessary for stability during all dance moves. You can learn how to practice senior balance exercises by following the instructions of a qualified physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd.

Gait Testing And Senior Balance Exercises

Daily Senior Balance Exercises Improve Gait

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Specific components that help improve gait for older adults include both gait testing and practicing senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Healthcare professionals like physical therapists, doctors, nurses and care givers understand that aging individuals need both sides of the equation: testing for imbalance and rehearsing senior balance exercises to maximize  fall prevention. Medical researchers have found that in gait testing, right and left feet are evaluated separately for swing (step length) and clearance, and then compared. Each foot should completely clear the floor and should step completely ahead of the other foot. Comparison includes step symmetry and continuity. Additionally during walking, the path deviation, trunk stability, and stance (normal or wide-based) are evaluated. A score is determined for each section; the total score is the sum of the two sections. Points are lost to varying degrees for requiring assistance, using an aid (cane, walker, furniture), multiple attempts, staggering, asymmetry, sway, and deviation. At first, it seems inherently unfair to consistently subtract points for using an aid (cane, walker), which is used to prevent falls. However, considering that this test determines relative fall risk, and illuminates the potential etiology of this risk, it is understandable that the need for a walking aid demonstrates a patient already at increased risk. A score of 22 or less (total 28) indicates a patient at risk. The true value of this test to the practitioner, the healthcare team, and others is not in the numerical score but in the accompanying comments. These comments should list the individual items with deficiencies and the nature of the deficiencies. Tinetti isolates and tests each element of balance and gait, making it easier to create a differential diagnosis for each deficiency. This helps direct further evaluation to determine the etiology.  Once the etiology is identified, remedy, mitigation, and fall prevention can begin by embarking on a senior balance exercise program.

Key Factor For Stability: Senior Balance Exercises

By performing senior balance exercises every day, medical researchers have shown that older adults can enhance their steadiness and limit their potential for a fall. Thankfully, now with the exercise for balance dvd there is an accessible home program to complete specific equilibrium routines developed by an experienced Physical Therapist. You can progress through basic stability exercises and advance to more difficult dynamic steadiness routines at your own pace and in the convenience and comfort of your own home. Reasons To Continue Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Physical Activity

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combocci ball

Staying active safely is a key desire to many older adults and starting a fitness program built on a combination of necessary strength exercises, cardiovascular exercises and  senior balance exercises is ideal. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have studied the World Senior Games participants and found several important factors to maintaining a healthy and active life in later years. World Senior Games participants are a group of older adults who have largely embraced a physically active lifestyle. In a  study, more than 94% of Senior Games participants were identified as having been physically active the majority of their life. Research has also  shown that these individuals enjoy better general health than their age-equivalent counterpart (Merrill, Roy, & Lowe, 2013; Merrill, et al., 2004). To better understand the reasons for the comparatively high level of physical activity among Senior Games participants, they were asked to rank 14 intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors of physical activity. The top reason given for being physically active was recreational enjoyment and fun (Merrill, et al., 2004), which is supported as a top reason for being physical activity in other research (Salmon, Owen, Crawford, Bauman, & Sallis 2003). The next four reasons given in the study were to improve quality of life, increase energy, control weight, and increase social opportunities (Merrill, et al., 2004), which have also been identified as important motivators of physical activity in other studies. To continue safe physical activity in later years, medical researchers as well as doctors, nurses and physical therapists recommend a regular routine of strength exercises, cardiovascular exercises and  senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Good Health

To stay healthy and active, healthcare professionals recommend a daily dose of exercise including strengthening, cardiovascular and  senior balance exercises. Daily exercise leads to remarkable health benefits including elevated mood, improved cardiovascular and muscular strength heightened balance abilities, reduced risk for falling and a greater overall quality of life. You can practice specific leg strengthening exercises and a series of senior balance exercises in the comfort of your own home by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises And Loss Of Adult Height

Senior Balance Exercise And How Much Height We Lose

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/John & Ann Betar, 101 & 97 yrs, married 80

Have you noticed yourself or your Mom or Dad shrinking a bit lately and wondered if senior balance exercises, a stretching program or posture retraining could be of any benefit? Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have recently published fascinating details about how our loss in height has multiple effects on our health. The broadly informative study by economists from the University of Southern California, Harvard University and Peking University used unique data from a new massive longitudinal survey of 17,708 adults beginning at age 45. The researchers show for the first time that lifestyle choices we make in adulthood – for example diet, exercise, healthy choices like not smoking-and not just the hand we’re dealt as children – influence how tall we stand as we age. The evidence shows that it is not only early life events that are associated with how we age, but health decisions in later life as well. They show that regardless of your maximum height, the loss of height over time is also an important indicator for other health issues as we age. To be specific, the research reveals an especially strong relationship between height loss and cognitive health. Those who had lost more height were also much more likely to perform poorly on standard tests of cognitive health such as short-term memory, ability to perform basic arithmetic and awareness of the date. Additionally, all humans go through physical changes with age, including an increase in body fat and decrease in bone mass. Signs of a decrease in height can be further exacerbated by certain kinds of arthritis, inflammation of spine joints or osteoporosis, which other studies have shown are associated with such lifestyle choices as diet, exercise and smoking. Furthermore, with an increase in orthopedic problems like arthritis, poor posture, and muscle weakness, older adults are at a greater risk for falling and incurring a debilitating injury.

Senior Balance Exercises For The Aging Adult

Practicing a Senior balance exercise program is one of the primary means of improving balance, reducing the incidence of falls, correcting posture and developing a strong base of support to begin a healthy exercise program. Performing stability routines on a daily basis is one of the most important choices you can make as a senior. equilibrium routines will help to strengthen the particular lower leg muscles that are needed to have good balance. stability exercises build a strong foundation of steadiness and rapid balance reactions at the feet and ankles that will help you to get out and start on a healthy walking program. learning specific balance techniques like how to center your body mass over the middle of your feet for optimal sensory feedback from the feet and the ankles will enable you to be more steady on your feet. Additionally, certain balance strategies have been developed to help you stand more upright, maintain a good posture and lessen the risk of falling forwards secondary to poor postural habits. These specific balance techniques and senior balance exercise programs are now available in the Exercise For Balance DVD, a home instructional dvd developed by an experienced Physical therapist. By starting your equilibrium work today, you can combat the loss of height that comes with aging.

Long Term Strength And Senior Balance Exercises After A Hip Fracture

Resistance Training Plus Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance for biking

Medical researchers are well on their way to finding the optimal combination of fitness programs for older adults to limit falls and improve balance and a combined effort of strength training exercises and senior balance exercises seems to be the best choice. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Recently, a study, Prolonged strength training in older patients after hip fracture, was performed by Hilde Sylliaads, et al in which she and her colleagues investigated the best way to enhance steadiness for those in the aging population who had previously fallen and experienced a hip fracture. The researchers  assessed the effect of a 12-week once-a-week prolonged strength-training and balance training program in a group of home-dwelling older hip fracture patients. The researchers found that the intervention group showed significant improvements in strength, gait speed and gait distance, steadiness, instrumental activities of daily living and self-rated health. The researchers results indicate that combining strength training programs with senior balance exercises effectively improve balance and the ability to perform activities of daily living, which translates into greater independence and quality of life for senior citizens.

Synergistic Effects Of Strength Training And Senior Balance Exercises

Both healthcare professionals and medical researchers recommend older adults rehearse routines that include balance exercises and resistance training programs to advance their balance abilities and their quality of life. For some older folks, strength and equilibrium routines can be combined in the same exercise. As an example, seniors who aim to increase their thigh (Quadriceps) muscle strength, which assists in performing activities like getting up from a chair and going up and down stairs, can practice a squat routine. By performing the knee bending or squatting exercise  without holding on to a counter or chair will challenge the person’s steadiness and simultaneously work on their stability. Additionally, another balance and strength exercise that can be combined involves performing toe raises. In this exercise, the person raises up on their toes, bringing their heels off the ground. Again, by rehearsing this routine without holding on to a stable object, the individual will also maximize their steadiness skills. Now you can learn how to perform these strength exercises and a step by step progression of senior balance exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd.

Better Daily Balance With Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Improve Stability

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comSenior exercises-- together

Healthcare professionals emphasize the need to practice senior balance exercises every day to reduce the risk of falling and enhance the quality of life for older adults. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Poor balance, a persistent problem for millions of Americans, triggers many  falls. Statistics reveal that one in three older individuals fall each year.  In young, healthy adults, balance is largely an automatic reflex.  However, gradual changes linked to growing older—such as weak or inflexible  muscles, slower reflexes, and worsening eyesight—affect the sense of balance.  Certain health problems—such as inner ear disorders, neuropathy, and heart  rhythm disturbances—may upset balance, too. Additionally, alcohol and many medications can result in decreased balance abilities.  That is why it is not surprising that every year, at least one out of three people  over age 65 falls. Shaky balance can spur a downward spiral.   With stability problems, often, people begin moving around  less during the day, voluntarily cutting back activities. Confidence dips,  muscles essential to balance grow weaker still, and unsteadiness rises in  response. As a consequence, there is an enormous rise in the fear of falling—and falls. Medical researchers have been studying falls and the effects of falls to try to help our senior population.  For instance, two physicians with expertise in balance have proven that with practice, almost anyone can achieve better  balance. Strong legs and flexible ankles help prevent falls and allow you to  catch yourself if you do trip. What’s more, the full blend of recommended  activities can help you build better awareness of your body and surroundings,  boost your confidence, and tune up your heart and lungs to keep you healthy and  independent.

Senior Balance Exercises Reduce Falls

Medical researchers have shown that a combination of leg strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises can reduce the potential of a fall for an aging individual. By practicing equilibrium routines on a consistent basis, an older person can strengthen the leg muscles in their calf and thigh area, which is essential for better stability. Additionally, steadiness exercises help to strengthen and speed up the balance reactions at the feet and ankles that are necessary to maintain an upright position during all walking and standing activities. You can learn the appropriate senior balance exercises and leg strengthening exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD, which can be conveniently used at home.

Senior Balance Exercises To Prevent Falling

Senior Balance Exercises For Geriatric Citizens With The Highest Risk Of Falling

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comSenior Balance Exercises Are Beneficial For All

Balance exercises are the most effective way to prevent falls and the serious injuries that result from falling. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Statistics tells us that after the age of 60 years old, our equilibrium system begins to deteriorate, but what are the other factors that add to the risk of slipping? For one thing, a large percentage of falls occur in the home and most often occur due to a loss of balance from not being able to control body position. Often times people tumble downstairs. Those fallers can be youngsters falling downstairs, Moms carrying their kids and fall down the stairs or seniors who lose their footing and fall downstairs. A second category of falls in the home includes tripping on clutter or throw rugs. Quite often people catch their toe on the edge of a rug and fall or they trip over the shoe or book lying on the floor. In addition, thankfully those with expertise in the area of balance and dizziness disorders, including researchers and rehabilitation specialists, also have learned that there are specific physical factors that contribute to falling and that should be addressed in instability exercise routines.

Senior Balance Exercises To Reduce Falling In The Geriatric Population

Senior Balance exercises are the best process to prevent falls and the fear that comes with falling, but lets review the other components of health and fitness that effects plunging. Before discussing the ingredients of a comprehensive balance training regime, we can explore what physical or medical indicators lead to falling in aging adults. Past Medical research strongly suggests that there is a direct correlation between the frequency of falling and basic physical fitness, including but not limited to leg strength, ankle stability, sensory feedback from the feet and ankles, and general endurance. Additionally, fundamental agility and balance abilities, like controling ones center balance point during weight shifting activities and correcting posture with off-balance movements, were predictors of balance performance and the indication of a fall pattern. We concluded that the old persons’ falling risk and physical fitness level should be evaluated in some intervals. Keeping in mind the person’s balance skills, balance reactions and general fitness level, rehabilitation programs should be designed to decrease the incidence of falling, and to increase lower and upper extremity muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance and especially their stability and dynamic balance performance. One way you can practice necessary senior balance exercises in the convenience of your own home is to follow the instruction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Balance Exercises And Activity Help To Reduce Strokes

Balance Exercises And Being Active Reduce Strokes

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Balance exercises and general physical activity are one of the factors that can keep you from suffering from a stroke. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Often times senior citizens are battling one health condition or another. There is one ailment that wrecks havoc with an elderly person’s physical and mental abilities as well as social and family interactions. That ailment is a STROKE. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the U.S. that are caused by abnormal changes in blood flow in the brain or the bursting of brain blood vessels. Each year, about 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke — the No. 4 killer and a leading cause of long-term disability. Every four minutes, an American dies from stroke. A new study, however, offers encouragement that seniors can make just small changes in their lifestyle and make a big reduction in their risk of a stroke. In the  American Heart Association’s Journal Stroke, a new study revealed that researchers used a stroke assessment tool developed by the association and named Life’s Simple 7.  The tool identified several areas that if managed well by an individual will lead to a reduction in the risk of a stroke. The seven categories include:
be active
control cholesterol
eat a healthy diet
manage blood pressure
maintain a healthy weight (diet and exercise)
control blood sugar and don’t smoke

Balance Exercises Help Cut The Risk Of A Stroke

Practicing balance exercises is one of the key factors to making small lifestyle adjustments that reduce the risk and incidence of having a stroke. By starting with equilibrium exercises you can improve balance abilities that are needed to continue with being active and participating in a fitness program like walking every day .Diet and exercise and reversing the habit of inactivity were some of the most important factors to decreasing the possibility of a stroke. By establishing excellent steadiness with all standing and walking activities, you can safely begin a fitness routine that will target increased heart rate and blood flow, which is needed to avoid a stroke. You can practice specific balance exercises designed by a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises To Avoid Falls In The Nursing Home

Senior Balance Exercises Help Reduce Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Practicing senior balance exercises is important for people in the older generation to avoid falling and ending up in a nursing home or falling while they are residing in a nursing home. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Unfortunately, sustaining a fall is often times one of the ways older folks end up in nursing homes. A common scenario is to sustain a fall that results in a fracture such as a hip fracture or a wrist fracture. Part of the recovery after surgery includes time in a nursing facility to assist the individual in taking care of themselves. More often than not for the elderly patients, they just do not bounce back strongly from a fall and a trip to the nursing home and they remain there indefinitely. Recently, healthcare researches have gathered statistics on fall that occur within a nursing facility. Those numbers include:
Nursing Home Falls
• 1.6 Falls per resident bed per year
• 2 – 3 times greater than the community
• 50% of all nursing home residents fall each year
• History of falls in the last 6-months is a risk factor for future falls
• Major liability concerns Rubestein 2002, Ray 2005 4
• Requires a system-based approach to preventing and reducing falls

Senior Balance Exercises To Prevent Falls

Performing senior balance exercises on a daily basis is one of the best ways to avoid falling and ending up in a nursing home. As you can see by the above statistics, once an individual is in a home their risk for falling increases quite a bit. Researchers have found that stability exercises help to develop good balance reactions at the feet and ankles as well as strong leg muscles that help with steadiness. Additionally, performing equilibrium exercises in combination with balance strategies that focus on the sensory input from the feet and ankles helps to stabilize the older adult on various surfaces like hardwood floors, thick carpet or grass. Now, you can practice senior balance exercises in the convenience of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD that was developed by an experienced Physical Therapist.

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/balance exercises

The Fourth of July is upon us and it is time to show off your balance exercises and balance techniques at the various celebration events. The Fourth of July is a wonderful time of the year with all the fun activities of the day. Those celebratory events, however, can often be very challenging to ones balance abilities. Some of the 4th of July events that I look forward to include challenging settings like:
-Walking on thick grass at a picnic
-Walking while holding a plate of barbecue yummy’s
-Standing at, walking to or marching in a parade
-Looking to enjoy the fireworks
All these activities and challenge your steadiness and create an unfortunate opportunity for a fall. Walking on thick grass it is difficult because of the uneven surface. Walking while holding a plate of food is challenging secondary to dividing your attention to holding the plate steady so as to not drop the food, while also trying to walk without losing your balance at the same time. Additionally, maneuvering through crowds at a parade or concert is equally difficult, in order to keep from being jostled and pushed over. Finally, many times when we look up to enjoy the fireworks we can easily lose our balance and fall backwards.
