Senior Balance Exercises For Healthy Mobility

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Medical researchers are vigorously studying what factors influence the health and quality of life for older adults and diet and performing senior balance exercises are two key components of staying mobile and active. Please see more at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers recently conducted a large study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where researchers found an association between women who maintain a healthy diet and a reduction in the risk of developing impaired physical function as they age.  To  date, “Little research has been done on how diet impacts physical function later in life. We study the connection between diet and many other aspects of health, but we don’t know much about diet and mobility, ” says Francine Grodstein, ScD, senior author of the study and a researcher in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at B Brigham and Women’s Hospital .  “We wanted to look at diet patterns and try to learn how our overall diet impacts our physicial function as we get older. ” Overall, the data indicate that women who maintained a healthier diet were less likely to develop physical impairments compared to women whose diets were not as healthy. More specifically, the researchers also found a higher intake of vegetables and fruits, a lower intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, trans-fats, and sodium, and a moderate alcohol intake, were each significantly associated with reduced rates of physical impairment. Among individual foods, the strongest relations were found for increased intakes of oranges, orange juice, apples and pears, romaine or leaf lettuce, and walnuts. “We think a lot about chronic diseases, cancer, heart disease, and tend not to think of physical function. Physical function is crucial as you age; it includes being able to get yourself dressed, walk around the block, and could impact your ability to live independently,” says Kaitlin Hagan, ScD, MPH, first author and a postdoctoral fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital . Medical researchers have also found that in addition to eating nutritious food, aging individuals who participate in senior balance exercises reduce their rate of falling and maintain a mobile and healthier lifestyle for longer.

Steps To Lose Weight And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Brisk Walking

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Weight loss is on the minds of many of us and starting a fitness program, beginning with  senior balance exercises can lead to great success. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now One of the most successful ways to battle obesity is to initiate a physical fitness program that includes brisk walking. In fact, some might say that walking is the easiest form of exercise because it is readily available, very inexpensive ( just a pair of sturdy walking shoes) and provides fresh air and many health benefits. To be specific, a University of Utah study in 2014 found that in women, every minute of brisk walking throughout the day could lower the risk of obesity by 5%. Additionally, another exciting study at the Harvard School of Public Health found that walking could cut the effects of obesity-promoting genes by half. For those older individuals who want to lose weight, practicing certain senior balance exercises is recommended before embarking on a brisk walking program.

Senior Balance Exercises For Steady Footsteps

Before heading out on a walking program, medical professionals suggest that you rehearse specific senior balance exercises to build a strong foundation of steadiness. One important equilibrium routine that helps with walking is tandem walking, where you walk along a line in a heel to toe manner. The narrow base of support employed with tandem walking develops strong balance reactions at the feet and ankles, which help you be more surefooted on outdoor walking paths. In addition, when you practice stability routines first, you will be able to increase the speed of your walking to a brisk pace, which is able to produce greater weight loss. You can learn how to perform senior balance exercises by joining in with the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises For Geriatric Patients With A Fall History

Senior Balance Exercises For Those Who Fall

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Falling can be a common occurrence among older individuals, and practicing senior balance exercises has been proven to help.   Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Sadly, the fall rate among older adults is one in three individuals within a one year time span. Often times, those falls can result in terrible injuries that drastically alter their lives. In recent years, medical researchers have been studying ways to help make our seniors safer, including those who have a history of falling. Hauer K, Rost B, Rütschle K, Opitz H, Specht N, Bärtsch P, Oster P, Schlierf G. in their study, Exercise training for rehabilitation and secondary prevention of falls in geriatric patients with a history of injurious falls, investigated the correlation between practicing senior balance exercises and the rate of falling for those in the older generation.

Senior Balance Exercises Help reduce Falls

Practicing senior balance exercises is one of the main ways older people can prevent falls and injuries due to falling. The researchers mentioned above evaluated the safety and efficacy of an exercise protocol designed to improve strength, mobility, and balance and to reduce subsequent falls in geriatric patients with a history of injurious falls. Their protocol included ambulatory strength training, functional performance, and balance 3 times per week for 3 months. Patients of the control group attended a placebo group 3 times a week for 3 months. Both groups received an identical physical therapy treatment 2 times a week, in which strengthening and balance training were excluded. The researchers concluded that Balance exercises as well as Progressive resistance training and progressive functional training are safe and effective methods of increasing strength and functional performance and reducing fall-related behavioral and emotional restrictions during ambulant rehabilitation in frail, high-risk geriatric patients with a history of injurious falls. Now, you can practice senior balance exercises developed by an experienced Physical therapist in the comfort of your own home with the exercise for balance dvd.
