Body Mass Index And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Fitness Programs

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

One key ingredient to slimming down is to participate in a fitness program, which begins with  senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Being overweight, indicated by the Body Mass Index, can lead to several health problems including heart failure. For example, obesity not only increases the risk of heart failure, but increased belly fat, combined with an ageing population, can also lead to a significant increase in the risk of heart failure, a study says. The study showed a clear correlation between higher Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference and the risk of heart failure. The researchers saw that with every 10 cm increase in waist circumference was linked to a 29 percent higher risk of heart failure from the analyses of 360,000 participants. “Overweight individuals had a 35 percent increased risk of heart failure as compared with normal weight individuals and our findings indicate that overweight should be considered a clear risk factor for heart failure,” said first author Dagfinn Aune from Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway. Research showed that a BMI between 25 and 30 kg/m2, which is considered overweight, is also associated with increased risk. A higher waist-to-hip ratio was also correlated with a progressively greater risk of developing heart failure. “Overweight and obesity increase the risk for heart muscle disease, which is an established risk factor for heart failure,” said Aune. “Physical activity and a more plant-based diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and whole grains are important to prevent overweight and obesity,” Aune said. Additionally, starting a physical fitness program with senior balance exercises can help older adults workout safely and avoid a risk of falling.

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Traumatic Brain Injuries often occur in older adults due to a fall and can be prevented by practicing senior balance exercises on a regular basis. Please see more at      http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Statistics published by the Centers For Disease Control report  that an estimated 1.7 million people sustain traumatic brain injury (TBI).  As a definition, traumatic brain injury is a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a head injury that affects normal functioning of the brain. Furthermore, seniors aged 75 and older have the highest rates of TBI-related hospitalization and death. Effects of traumatic brain injury could include impaired thinking, movement, vision or hearing problems, or personality changes as also depression. Traumatic brain injuries can also cause the formation of blood clots so it is imperative to visit a doctor immediately if the following signs are noted:
•    Headache that does not recede
•    Weakness
•    Inability to coordinate movements
•    Vomiting or nausea
•    Slurred speech
•    Consistent drowsiness
•    Seizures
•    Inability to recognize familiar faces or places
•    Increased agitation
Medical researchers have found that around 81% of traumatic brain injuries in adults aged 65 and older was due to falls. However, these injuries can be prevented, especially when it comes to falls. One of the best ways to minimize the potential of a fall is to perform senior balance exercises every day.

Senior Balance Exercises To Prevent TBIs

One of the optimal keys to enhancing steadiness and reducing the risk of falling is to participate in a fitness program that includes senior balance exercises. As an example, you can practice an equilibrium routine that is called tandem walking where you walk along a line in a heel to toe fashion. Reducing Depression And Senior Balance Exercises

Start Senior Balance Exercisesbocci ball

For any older adult, starting a fitness program with senior balance exercises can enhance stability and help reduce depression. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Unfortunately, depression is common among older individuals as they struggle with isolation, declining health and immobility. Medical researchers, however, have found that exercising three times a week reduces the odds of developing depression by around 16 percent — and for every extra weekly activity session, the risk drops further. In a study conducted as part of a public health research consortium, the UK-based scientists said the relationship they found between depression and exercise points to ways to simultaneously improve both mental and physical health. Leisure time physical activity has a protective effect against depression,” said Snehal Pinto Pereira of University College London’s Institute of Child Health, who led the study. Depression is one of the most common forms of mental illness, affecting more than 350 million people worldwide. Depression is ranked by the World Health Organization as the leading cause of disability globally. Additionally, Chris Power, a UCL professor of epidemiology and public health who also worked on the study, said it added weight to existing evidence suggesting exercise could be used as a treatment for depression as well as boosting physical health. For older adults to exercise safely, healthcare professionals suggest that they begin with senior balance exercises to boost their overall steadiness.

Senior Balance Exercises Help Beat Depression

To minimize depression through increased physical activity, first start a program of  senior balance exercises. One basic equilibrium routine you can rehearse involves standing on one foot for twenty seconds, three times in a row. this single stance stability exercise will enhance your steadiness with all movement activities. You can join in with the single stance routine and other senior balance exercises by following along with the instruction of a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Motivation For Senior Balance Exercises

Get Going On Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comReady for balance exercises...

The benefits of older individuals participating in physical activity and senior balance exercises is well known, however, motivating our older loved ones and patients can be a challenge. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical experts like doctors, nurses and physical therapists have shown that the health benefits of regular physical activity are clear and are relevant at any age. However, declining activity rates in older age coupled with physiological aging and disease make exercise that much more important for older adults. Regular physical activity can help older persons reduce their risk of chronic disease, manage illnesses they already have, function better physically and mentally, avoid injuries such as falls, and live longer independently. Evidence for the benefits of exercise for older adults has been accumulating for quite some time and the question of whether or not exercise is beneficial has largely been answered. A more relevant question now is how do we effectively motivate adults to change their exercise behaviors and stay active as they age? One avenue to motivate those in the again population to exercise is to make the opportunity for those senior citizens easy and accessible. As an example, instead of having the elderly make the effort to travel to a physical therapy clinic or gym to partake in exercises, a better way is to have a detailed exercise program offered to them in the convenience of their own home. Thankfully, there is now an option to do that through the professionally filmed Exercise For Balance DVD.

Practice Senior Balance Exercises At Home

Medical researchers have proven that a consistent routine of senior balance exercises makes the most progress towards improving stability and decreasing the risk for falling. As a result, the most effective way to advance balance abilities is to perform equilibrium routines every day. Also, an effective way to motivate senior citizens to following through with their exercise program is to make it easy and convenient. In the Exercise For Balance DVD, both convenience and simplicity are readily available. The DVD provides step by step instruction on how to perform specific stability exercises. Additionally, the DVD includes certain lower extremity strengthening exercises that target the muscles in the legs that are essential for steadiness. Additionally, the DVD is easy to operate. yOU DO NOT HAVE TO TRY TO EXPALIN TO AN OLDER INDIVIDUAL HOW TO FIND A PROGRAM ON THE COMPUTER AND DOWNLOAD THE INFORMATION. jUST POP THE dvd IN AND START EXERCISING!

Older Women And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Older Women

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combocci ball

Medical researchers are find that older women who are active, starting with  senior balance exercises, have a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now According to the American Heart Association, older women who are active a few times weekly lower risk of heart disease, stroke, blood clot. In other words, just a little exercise by older women is better than none, at least when it comes to lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke and blood clots. Being active just a few times a week is all it takes.  Physical activity that was studied included:
● Women who performed strenuous physical activity— enough to cause sweating or a faster heart beat — two to three times per week were about 20 percent less likely to develop heart disease, strokes or blood clots compared to participants who reported little or no activity.
   ● Among active women, there was little evidence of further risk reductions with more frequent activity.
   ● Physical activities associated with reduced risk included walking, gardening, and cycling.
Miranda Armstrong, M.Phil., Ph.D., the study’s lead author and a physical activity epidemiologist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom said, “However, to prevent heart disease, stroke and blood clots, our results suggest that women don’t need to do very frequent activity as this seems to provide little additional benefit above that from moderately frequent activity.” Participants included 1.1 million women in the United Kingdom with no history of cancer, heart disease, stroke, blood clots, or diabetes who joined the Million Women study in 1996-2001. Their average age when they joined the study was 56. Additionally to be safe, medical providers like doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and physical therapists recommend that you start a senior balance exercise program before initiating a physical activity program.

Senior Balance Exercises For Older Adults

To be safe with movement activities, start with a senior balance exercise program. Before heading out on a walk or a bike ride, practice a few basic equilibrium exercises to establish strong balance abilities that will help reduce any risk of falling during those activities. One simple equilibrium routine involves standing in a tandem stance where one foot is directly behind the other foot in a line. With this narrow base of support your balance reactions will be challenged, preparing you for the challenges of outdoor activities. You can learn this senior balance exercise and others by following the instruction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Check Stability And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Greater Steadiness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

In the healthcare environment, we need to be cognizant of our patient’s overall stability and help them start on senior balance exercises as needed. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Fall risk assessments are critical for older adults over the age of sixty since that is the time frame when the incidence of falling goes up to about one in three aging individuals. In hospitals, nursing homes and outpatient facilities, patient falls are a critical patient safety issue. Patients of all ages and ability can be at risk for a fall due to medical conditions, medications, surgeries, procedures, environmental conditions and diagnostic testing. fall risk screening/assessment. should be completed on patients who are in these categories :
-All patients over the age of 60 years
All patients who have had 2 falls or any fall with injury within the last year Any patient who is unsteady or having difficulty walking
In addition,  Providers should conduct an in-depth assessment on all patients who screen positive for  fall risk. If you are a healthcare provider and you are with a patient who is at risk for a fall, you can consider these steps:
·         Offer the patient a wheelchair or other assistive device (walker, cane) while in the office
·         Ask patients to bring any assistive devices that they use in for their appointment
·         Walk next to the patient, not behind or in front of them, so you can assist them if needed
·         Use a scale with hand rails, ask if the provider if the weight is necessary or support the patient while they are on the scale
·         Place the patient in a chair in the room with hand rails when possible rather than having the patient sit on an exam table
Use a room with a low exam table if available
·         Stay with the patient and support them if they are unsteady
·         Do not attempt to lift a patient by yourself unless you have had training, ask for help
Furthermore, you can encourage unsteady patients to perform senior balance exercises to help them develop better steadiness.

Demonstrate Senior Balance Exercises

Healthcare providers can demonstrate senior balance exercises to aging individuals to help them build good stability skills and reduce the risk of falling. One easy way to educate older adults on which senior balance exercises to perform and how to practice them includes following along with the instruction of a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Benefits Of Walks And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Steady Walking

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comWalking- Exercise for balance for walking

Having a regular fitness program of brisk walking and  senior balance exercises can be great for your health. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  According to many medical professionals, walking has long been associated with several health benefits. For those busy individuals among us who can’t take out time to exercise, walking is the least that can be done to ensure that your body engages in some sort of physical activity. Health experts suggest that a daily walk can not only help you remain fit but it also acts as a stress buster. Specifically with aging adults, there is more good news in regards to walking. According to a recent study conducted at the University of Kansas, walking regularly may prevent memory decline in older adults. The study also showed that the residential or living area also has an impact on our mental health. It turns out that certain features of a neighbourhood that encourage walking for transportation or that require having someplace worth walking to, like neighbours’ houses, stores and parks, is beneficial. Healthcare providers like doctors, nurses and physical therapists recommend that individuals in their later years should start a program of senior balance exercises to build excellent steadiness before starting a walking program.

Senior Balance Exercises For Steadier Walking

To maximize your walking program, it is best to star with senior balance exercises. Equilibrium routines can be done in the comfort of your own home and the balance skills you learn can be transferred to walking in outdoor venues. As an example, you can start with tandem walking, which involves walking heel to toe along a line down the hallway. This tandem walking procedure develops quality balance reactions at your feet and ankles, which are necessary for walking on hiking trails, thick grass, dirt paths or other surfaces. You can learn which senior balance exercises to perform by following along with an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Visual Deficits And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Visual Problems

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Often times, older individuals suffer from loss of vision, which can lead to imbalance and a need for  senior balance exercises to reduce and possibility of a fall. Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now There are several visual problems that come on later in life. One common problem stems from blurry vision, where the eye and brain has difficulty keeping an object in focus. Blurred vision can come from a number of causes including macular degeneration, which is a gradual onset, central vision affected (central scotoma) without loss of peripheral vision, macular drusen or scarring, neovascular membrane. additionally, blurred vision can be a result of Optic neuritis, which can be due to multiple sclerosis (in which onset of optic neuritis is rapid). Furthermore, senior citizens who struggle with balance and dizziness symptoms often have visual issues stemming from their vestibular system, the inner ear organ that detects all rotatory and acceleration motions. As a result, for al older individuals struggling with visual complications like blurred vision, practicing senior balance exercises is one way to minimize the side effect of imbalance and risk for falling.

Senior Balance Exercises For Visual Problems

For aging individuals who experience visual difficulties like blurred vision or decreased depth perception with activities like stepping off a curb or going up or down stairs, performing  senior balance exercises is highly recommended to reduce any potential of a fall. To compensate for visual abnormalities, older folks can rely more heavily on their sense of touch. For ambulating in the community like in a crowded grocery store or a park with uneven surfaces, paying attention to your foot placement and sense of touch between your feet and the ground will enhance your sensory feedback to the balance center in your brain. By using a greater amount of sensory feedback, you will be more stable and able to walk on challenging surfaces. To maximize your balance abilities, You can practice certain senior balance exercises and stability techniques presented in the Exercise For Balance DVd and explained by a knowledgeable Physical Therapist.

Trunk Strengthening And Senior Balance Exercises

Perform Trunk strengthening With Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Healthcare professionals and medical researchers desire to provide optimal treatment programs  to maximize stability for older adults, and including both trunk muscle strengthening and senior balance exercises are critical. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In order to enhance steadiness and limit  possibilities of falling, it is recommended to participate in fitness programs that include equilibrium exercises as well as trunk strengthening exercises. To be specific, medical researchers Granacher U, Gollhofer A, Hortobágyi T, Kressig RW, Muehlbauer T. studied balance abilities as they relate to functional capacities in older individuals. In their study, The importance of trunk muscle strength for balance, functional performance, and fall prevention in seniors, they looked at balance, strength, activities of daily living and quality of life. According to the researchers, the aging process results in a number of functional (e.g., deficits in balance and strength/power performance), neural (e.g., loss of sensory/motor neurons), muscular (e.g., atrophy of type-II muscle fibers in particular), and bone-related (e.g., osteoporosis) deteriorations. Traditionally, balance and/or lower extremity resistance training were used to mitigate these age-related deficits. However, the effects of resistance training are limited and poorly translate into improvements in balance, functional tasks, activities of daily living, and fall rates. Thus, it is necessary to develop and design new intervention programs that are specifically tailored to counteract age-related weaknesses, resulting in balance deficitis. Recent studies indicate that measures of trunk muscle strength (TMS) are associated with variables of static/dynamic balance, functional performance, and falls (i.e., occurrence, fear, rate, and/or risk of falls). Further, there is preliminary evidence in the literature that core strength training (CST) and Pilates exercise training (PET) have a positive influence on measures of strength, balance, functional performance, and falls in older adults. The researchers showed that  age-related deficits in measures of trunk muscle strength, balance, functional performance, and falls can be mitigated by combining core strength training and senior balance exercises.

Combine Senior Balance Exercises With Trunk Strengthening

To make the most out of practicing senior balance exercises, researchers found that combining them with trunk strengthening routines will maximize stability for older adults. Currently, one of the popular fitness ptpgrams to build trunk muscle strength includes Pilates exercises. One of the critical aspects of Pilates strengthening is that it can be progressed in a step by step fashion that follows the capacity of each individual. Concurrently, senior balance exercises can also be tailored to each older individual to progress their balance abilities at thier own speed an comfort level. As an example, the professionally filmed Exercise For Balance DVD has the ability to focus on one equilibrium rouitne until the participant is ready to advance to the next exercise.
