Balance Exercises Reduce The Risk of Falling in Older People Discharged From Hospital

Balance Exercises Decrease The Risk Of Falling

Balance exercises are essential to practice on a daily basis for folks in their later years. See  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises are especially important for individuals who have been recently discharged from the hospital. As we all know, a hospital stay inevitably involves time on your back to recuperate. Unfortunately, the side effect of lying in bed to recover also leaves an individual weaker and more shaky. Additionally, often times a stay in the hospital involves medication that can cause dizziness and lightheadedness, which also diminishes balance and can lead to falls.

Balance Exercises And Hospital Stays

Balance exercises and their effectiveness to reduce falls after a hospital stay has been recently investigated by medical professionals. Vogler C.M., Sherrington C., Ogle S.J. and Lord S.R. in their report, Reducing Risk of Falling in Older People Discharged From Hospital: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Seated Exercises, Weight-Bearing Exercises, and Social Visits looked at balance exercises, strength exercises and the incidence of falling. Objective: To compare the efficacy of seated exercises and weight-bearing (WB) exercises, including balance exercises, with social visits on fall risk factors in older people recently discharged from hospital. Conclusions: In older people recently discharged from the hospital, both exercise programs reduced fall risk score in older people.

Balance Exercises Have Many Benefits

Balance Exercises Are Very Beneficial

Balance exercises  are primarily thought to help reduce the frequency and risk of falling for the older population. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers are finding that balance exercises have numerous benefits. Balance exercises and balance training advance the concept of centering ones weight through the middle of the body, which helps to correct faulty posture, especially for those with osteoporosis and kyphosis. Balance exercises help individuals with weak or loose ankles stabilize their ankles and enhance balance reactions.

Balance Exercises Are Beneficial

Balance exercises have been proven through medical research to also enhance visual acuity. Visual acuity and visual reactions improve through the balance exercises and balance training that involves coordinating eye movements. During balance exercises, you can add varying levels of difficulty including tracking an object side to side or up and down. You can also repeatedly focus on an object close and far away to challenge visual abilities. Balance exercises also increase gait stability, which is needed with all our walking movements. In particular, the Exercise For Balance DVD includes excellent gait stability training to assist in improving balance with walking.

Gait exercises can assist a person to be more stable while walking, going up and down stairs or stepping off curbs.

Balance Exercises And Gait Exercises

Balance exercises and accompanying gait exercises have been a focus of medical researchers to see how those exercise routines contribute to physical function in older adults. Shimada H., Uchiyama Y. and Kakurai S. in their study, Specific effects of balance and gait exercises on physical function among the frail elderly, measured the benefit of balance exercises and gait training.  Objective: To evaluate the specific effects of balance and gait exercises among frail elderly individuals. Interventions: The two exercise groups received balance or gait exercise for 40 minutes, 2-3 times weekly, for 12 weeks. Results: Comparison of the performance before and after intervention demonstrated significant improvement in One Leg Standing Test, Functional Reach Test and Functional Balance Scale in the balance exercise group, and Functional Balance Scale, Timed ‘Up and Go’ Test and Stair Descending Test showed improvement in the gait exercise group.  Conclusions: Balance exercises led to improvements in static balance function, and gait exercises resulted in improvements to dynamic balance and gait functions in the very frail elderly.

Balance exercises are as important to our every day lives as eating and drinking. Balance exercises help reduce the risk of falling. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now One essential aspect of balance exercises and balance training is to utilize the sense of touch between our feet and the floor to assist in ground in promoting stability and enhancing overall balance with standing and walking activities.

Balance Exercises And Stability Awareness

Balance exercises and the awareness of falling has been evaluated by medical researchers. Garcia A., Marciniak D., McCune L., Smith E. and Ramsey R. in their recent study, Promoting fall self-efficacy and fall risk awareness in older adults,  looked at balance exercises and fall risk. Introduction: This study examined whether participation in a modified version of the “Stepping On” program was effective in increasing fall self-efficacy, static and dynamic balance, and awareness of fall risks in older adults. Conclusion:  participation in the modified “Stepping On” program did lead to an overall increase in awareness of fall risks. Modifying the evidence-based program made it feasible to test in a new community and may have empowered older adults with the knowledge to prevent future falls.

Balance Exercises Help Fear Of Falling

Balance Exercises Help With Falling

Balance exercises are essential to help not only improve balance and stability but also to reduce the fear of falling. As we age our balance abilities diminish and the frequency of falling increases. Unfortunately, 20 million seniors are predicted to fall this year alone. The effects of diminishing balance abilities not only increase the risk of falling but also the fear of falling. Many times, seniors are immobilized by a fear of falling, which further increases the risk of a fall. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises Help Overcome  The Fear Of Falling

Balance exercises can assist to enhance confidence and diminish the fear of falling. A recent research study looked at balance exercises and the fear of falling. Denkinger M.D., Igl W., Lukas A., Bader A., Bailer S., Franke S., Denkinger C.M., Nikolaus T. and Jamour M., in their study, Relationship between fear of falling and outcomes of an inpatient geriatric rehabilitation population, looked at balance exercises and the fear of falling. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of various risk factors on three functional outcomes during rehabilitation. SETTING: Geriatric inpatient rehabilitation unit. RESULTS: Fear of falling predicted functioning across all outcomes except for habitual gait speed at discharge and follow-up. Visual comparison of functional trajectories between subgroups confirmed these findings, with different levels of fear of falling across time in linear plots. Thus, superior ability of this measure to discriminate between functional status at baseline across all outcomes and to discriminate between functional change especially with regard to the performance-based outcome was demonstrated. CONCLUSION: Falls-related self-efficacy is the only parameter that significantly predicts rehabilitation outcome at discharge and follow-up across all outcomes.

Learn Balance Exercises To Be Grounded

Balance Exercises Help Us Feel Grounded

Balance exercises can teach us how to find our center balance point when standing or sitting. One key component of balance exercises and balance training is to focus on the balance point between our feet in our arches. While focusing on that point, our brain is able to connect the sense of touch between our feet and the floor to help us feel grounded or more stable. Focusing on the balance point helps to improve balance and reduce the risk and frequency of falling and being injured.

Balance Problems Post Hip Fracture

Balance Problems following a hip fracture

Balance problems occur all too often in individuals after a hip fracture. With a hip fracture, the person can have deficits in both leg strength and balance. Balance problems can be visible during walking or moving from sitting to standing. Balance problems have been the focus of recent research , since about 20 million older adults fall every year, often times fracturing a hip. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Postural balance and self-reported balance confidence in older adults with a hip fracture history

Recent research was done by Sihvonen S. on balance problems following a hip fracture. Balance dysfunction and loss of balance confidence have been associated with functional limitations and loss of independency in daily tasks. This study examined various aspects of postural balance and balance confidence between older adults with a hip fracture history and their non-fractured counterparts. A comprehensive assessment of balance capacity in older adults with a hip fracture history may help to identify aspects of postural balance that play an important role in the mobility recovery and the avoidance of further falls. Methods: The present study comprised 79 community-dwelling older adults with a hip fracture history and 31 non-fractured subjects of the same age, who participated in balance tests including both force platform measures and functional balance testing (Berg Balance Scale, BBS). In addition, balance confidence was assessed with the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale. Results: Persons with a hip fracture history had a markedly poorer balance control and were significantly less confident maintaining their balance during daily activities compared to the controls.

Conclusions: Balance impairments along with the loss of balance confidence are persistent problems among community-dwelling older adults with a history of hip fracture and may contribute to mobility limitations and the risk of falling.

Balance Exercises For Active Elderly People

Balance Exercises Help Active Older Folks

Balance exercises and balance training have been suggested for individuals to continue on a daily basis as they age.  For more information, see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now . Now a long-term research study has been published that confirms the decline in balance and the need for seniors to perform balance exercises.

Balance Exercises Help Even Active Seniors

Balance exercises, balance abilities and frequent falling has been studied over a several year period for active seniors. Gustafson A.-S., Noaksson L., Grahn Kronhed A.-C., Mo¨ller M. and Mo¨ller C. in their study, Changes In Balance Performance In Physically Active Elderly People Aged 73-80, looked at balance exercises and balance abilities over a seven year period.

In our hospital in 1989 a series of 30 healthy elderly people participated in a study to evaluate the effect of physical training on improving balance. Thereafter, the majority of the people in this group continued with some kind of balance training and balance exercises. Seven years later we followed up 17 of the people who had participated in the original study. We wanted to evaluate the balance performance of these physically active elderly people and compare it with their balance performance 7 years previously. RESULTS:  Balance was found to be significantly impairedcompared with 1989 in four out of six static balance tests. This study confirms that as we age even active seniors decline in their balance skills, resulting in a higher frequency of falling and greater risk of injury. This study also suggests that continuing balance exercises and balance training is imperative to try to keep balance abilities at their highest level for as long as possible as we age.
