Begin Balance Exercises Before Physical Activity

Balance Exercises As A Precursor To Physical Activity

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com walking balance exercises

Balance exercises are important to practice before starting a fitness program. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Stability routines help you develop the necessary steadiness that is needed to begin a physical activity program. There are numerous benefits to physical activity.
Physical activity helps to–
  • Maintain weight or lose weight.
  • Reduce high blood pressure.
  • Reduce risk for type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and several  forms of cancer.
  • Reduce pain from arthritis and associated disability.
  • Reduce risk for osteoporosis.
  • Reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Reduce the risk and incidence for falls.

Begin Balance Exercises Before Physical Activity

Balance exercises are the first step towards getting a healthy fitness program started. Physical activity can include taking walks, lifting weights, riding a bike, hiking, golfing, skiing, dancing any many other movement associated activities. For all those activities, having good balance is a precursor to enjoying a safe and effective fitness regime. You can start with simple stability exercises in your home while standing on varying surfaces like hardwood floors, tile or linoleum and move on to softer surfaces like carpet or couch cushions, which are more difficult to balance on. You can progress your standing equilibrium exercises to more difficult activities which include walking or stepping through an obstacle course. For fun ideas as well as specific balance techniques and balance exercises to follow, get the Exercise For Balance DVD, a professionally filmed instructional DVD created by an experienced Physical Therapist.

Balance Exercises And Maintaining Weight

Balance Exercises To Help With Maintaining Weight

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Balance exercises can be an excellent start to developing an exercise program that helps you lose weight and maintain weight. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now By starting a fitness routine with balance exercises, you can first establish the necessary balance abilities that are needed with vigorous activities like brisk walking and weight lifting that are essential to at first lose and then maintain weight. Equilibrium exercises help you improve balance skills and ensure that you have a firm foundation of stability before you advance to other fitness routines.  People often ask how much activity is needed to lose weight that will in turn improve joint function, add energy to your day and enhance overall health like cardiovascular fitness, decrease arthritis pain, bolster muscle strength and joint stability.  In general, when it  comes to weight management, people vary greatly in how much physical activity  they need. As a starting point to lose weight,  begin exercising and work your way up to 150 minutes of  moderate-intensity aerobic activity, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent mix of the two each week. Strong scientific evidence  shows that physical activity can help you maintain your weight over time.  However, the exact amount of physical activity needed to do this is not clear  since it varies greatly from person to person. For some people it is possible that you may need  to do more than the equivalent of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a  week to maintain your weight. Additionally, to keep the weight off, most individuals need a high amount of  physical activity unless you also adjust your diet and reduce the amount of  calories you ingest by eating and drinking. Getting to and staying at a healthy weight  requires both regular physical activity and a healthy eating plan.

Balance Exercises To Start Your Exercise Routine

Balance exercises should be the first step towards starting a fitness program. By practicing stability exercises, you can develop the balance skills needed for working out like combining bicep curls and lunges. Lunges require good balance to be able to perform the static and dynamic movement of standing on one foot while stepping forward with the other foot. Another workout exercise can include lifting weights while stepping up and off a step. Good balance is needed for the dynamic movement on the step while simultaneously lifting weights. For fun ideas on balance exercises and strengthening exercises, try the Exercise For Balance DVD at home.

Balance Exercses And Safety Concerns For Parkinson’s Patients

Safe Balance Exercises For Parkinson’s Patients

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Balance exercises are an important component of daily activities for those folks who have Parkinson’s. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In general, Parkinson’s disease occurs secondary to a breakdown in the communication between the brain and the body. To be more specific, the neurotransmitter, Dopamine, is manufactured in a deep region of the brain called the substantia nigra. The job of Dopamine is to stimulate the cells in the basal ganglia area of the brain that ultimately controls movement. In individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, the cells in the substantia nigra unexpectantaly and prematurely die, resulting in a reduction of available Dopamine. Parkinsonism is the official name for the collection of common symptoms that include tremor, stiffness, forward bent posturing, slowness of movement, unsteady gait and balance problems.  As a result, people with Parkinson’s suffer from movement disorders including difficulties with
-rising from a chair
-walking
-climbing stairs
-activities of daily living
Because of the familiar symptoms of Parkinson’s, balance exercises are critical to perform on a daily basis.

Balance Exercises To Improve Safety

Balance exercises should be practiced on a daily basis for those folks with Parkinson’s Disease. Since a fall can lead to fractures and head injuries, falling is one of the most dangerous complications of Parkinson’s Disease. to improve safety,  individuals with Parkinson’s Disease should be educated on the risks of falling as well as specific techniques for getting up from a chair, walking, and stair climbing. Patients with Parkinson’s should also be informed that a common side effect of Levodopa, the medication usually prescribed to those with Parkinson’s Disease, is dizziness upon rising, secondary to the drop in blood pressure. Specific balance strategies can include getting up from a chair and taking a minute to center their balance, allowing the dizziness to subside. These balance techniques and other stability exercises can be practiced in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises To Compensate For Changes In The Foot

Senior  Balance Exercises And Balance Problems

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Senior Balance Exercises are essential to perform on a daily basis for those individuals over sixty years old and for anyone who is experiencing changes in their feet. Our stability comes from our feet when we are standing and walking. Our feet play an enormous role in providing  sensory input to the balance system in our brain, which is used to determine what kind of surface we are walking on, how high to step up on a curb or step and many other various bits of information. For many of us, as we get along in years, we also experience foot pain on a regular basis. Since our environment has changed over the decades to walking on hard surfaces like cement, hardwood floors, tile, we tend to have more and more foot pain as we go through life. Additionally, foot wear is a big contributor to foot pain. Foot wear can include high heels or flip-flops, which both lead to plantar fascia pain, bunions, heels spurs and general foot pain. Furthermore, for those folks with medical conditions like Diabetes, Peripheral Neuropathy and Sciatica, they can also have foot pain from their medical issues. Lastly, foot pain, which leads to balance problems, can come from general aging patterns like:
-Loss of Type II fast twitch fibers in the muscles in the foot
-Decreased ability to adjust to changes in the surface of the ground like rug or curb heights, grass
-Lower speeds of muscle firing to adjust to uneven surfaces
-Greater number of deformities in the toes, mid foot, rear foot
All of these changes in the aging foot can lead to decreased balance abilities and a greater risk for falling.
Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Senior Balance Exercises To Compensate For Changes In The Foot

Practicing senior balance exercises every day can help compensate for the changes in the foot that are seen with aging. Performing equilibrium exercises can help to build the balance reactions in the feet and ankles to the best of their ability. Stability exercises also enhance leg strength and the brain-body connection that is needed for good steadiness. You can advance balance routines by standing on uneven or soft surfaces to assist in maximizing the firing rate of foot muscles to correct body position during changes in the body’s center alignment. Now, for your convenience, you can practice these senior balance exercises and specific balance strategies at home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Step Back In Time With Balance Exercises

Remember Good Times With Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

As we grow older into our sixties and seventies, we should practice balance exercises on a daily basis to help improve balance and reduce the risk and incidence of falling. At times, performing stability routines every day can get a bit mundane. Consequently, to spice up your equilibrium exercise program try recalling the balance work you did in your youth. When we were younger, every movement was a challenge to our balance from pretending the curb was a balance beam and trying to walk along the curb as far as possible without falling off. Outside, many kids try jumping from one rock to another, to try to not touch the ground. At the playground, kids love to spend hours going round and round on the merry-go-round. Additionally, kids can go back and forth all afternoon on a swing without getting dizzy. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Recall The Fun You Had As A Kid With Balance Exercises

Balance exercises are essential for older adults to practice to diminish any possible risk for falling.  As kids however, we naturally challenged our balance skills on a daily basis, which helped to develop good balance abilities.  One of my favorite balance activities in my youth was to bounce on the Hippity Hop Ball for hours on end. My brother and I would have races on the Hippity Hop Ball. We would careen around the table as fast as possible in hopes of crossing the finish line first. Those memories bring an instant smile and motivation to continue with working on balance skills even to this day in a fun and enjoyable way. Now you can have  fun and practice your balance techniques and balance exercises at home every day with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Training To Help Folks Of All Ages

Balance Training To Reduce Falls Among Seniors And Kids

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Balance training is a sure foundation for our very lives when we first began to develop as children and as we age into our later years as seniors. The funny things is that there are many similarities between our early years as children and our later years as seniors— just ask any one in their midlife trying to take care of individuals from both generations. In both seniors and children, balance exercises and balance abilities are critical to prevent falling and to diminish the risk of injuries from falling. See   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Training For The Young And Old

Balance training for seniors and children has been a recent focus of medical researchers to help prevent the frequency of falling. Granacher U., Muehlbauer T., Gollhofer A., Kressig R.W. and Zahner L. in their report, An intergenerational approach in the promotion of balance and strength for fall prevention, presented information on balance exercises and balance training for seniors and children. The risk of sustaining a fall is particularly high in children and seniors. Deficits in postural control and muscle strength either due to maturation, secular declines or biologic aging are two important intrinsic risk factors for falls. During life span, performance in variables of static postural control follows a U-shaped curve with children and seniors showing larger postural sway than healthy adults. Measures of dynamic postural control (i.e. gait speed) as well as isometric (i.e. maximal strength) and dynamic muscle strength (i.e. muscular power) follow an inverted U-shaped curve during life span, again with children and seniors showing deficits compared to adults. There is evidence that particularly balance and resistance training are effective in counteracting these neuromuscular constraints in both children and seniors. Further, these training regimens are able to reduce the rate of sustaining injuries and falls in these age groups. As we can see from their study, balance exercises and balance training is significantly important for both seniors and children.

Balance Training For Later In Life

Balance Training To Be Safe In Later Years

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Balance training is a key component of staying safe and reducing falls for older individuals. Unfortunately, as the years go by our balance system components undergo a gradual decline in effectiveness and function. For some, that decline can be accelerated with a fall, a medical condition like Diabetes or Peripheral Neuropathy or an orthopedic issue like a knee or hip replacement. Across the board, researchers have proven that balance training techniques and stability exercises can improve steadiness, enhance function in activities of daily living and enable an individual to avoid falls as they age. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Training To Enhance Function For Later Years

By practicing balance exercises and following balance training principles in our younger years, we can maximize our balance abilities as we get older. One of the core balance training techniques is to learn how to center your balance and use your balance point during all standing and walking activities. If you become proficient at that particular equilibrium principle in your earlier years while you still have good sensory feedback from your feet and strong balance reactions at the ankles, then cognitively your brain and body connection for good balance will already be established. As an example, we recognize that when you learn to ride a bike as a kid, you develop the necessary balance and motor programs that stay with you as an adult. In the same fashion, when you develop good balance skills in your youth and middle age, those brain-body connections will be well established for when you hit your sixties and seventies, a time when balance skills are needed the most to avoid falls. Quite frankly, the time to begin balance exercises and balance training is NOW—  for whatever age you are. Fortunately, now you can practice specific balance training techniques and stability exercises in the convenience of your own home and in the midst of your busy schedule with the Exercise For Balance DVD, a professionally filmed balance program developed by an expert Physical Therapist.

Balance Exercises For All Kinds Of Activities

Balance Exercises For Unusual Activities Jackson Hole

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Balance exercises are important to perform every day to stay safe with common activities at home like walking up and down stairs, turning in the bathroom, reaching up in the kitchen. Stability exercises can also be helpful for outdoor activities like walking your dog, hiking, playing golf or tennis or taking a Sumba class at the gym. Recently, I had the experience of applying my equilibrium exercises while snowboarding. Unfortunately, the weather was not great. It was very cold, snowing, very windy with low visibility. Thankfully, my balance skills were up for the weather and the snow conditions.    Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-nowPhoto: Snowboarder going over cliff in Telluride, Colorado

Balance Exercises For Unusual Activities

Balance exercises and balance training are a must for anyone who wants to strap on a snowboard. Snowboarding can be immensely fun, but it requires enormous balance abilities. For instance, to just attach your feet to the snowboard you need to apply a simultaneous combination of static and dynamic stability. Typically, when you get on and off the lift, you have one foot strapped on the board and the other foot free. The strapped in foot becomes your static balance mechanism. That leg must keep you upright while your other foot is pushing off dynamically to get you in position for the lift. If you make it on and off the lift successfully without falling, then you get the opportunity to use your balance skills to strap in the second foot. I find that in days when you get to board in powder, it is more effective to attach the second foot while standing rather than try to sit down and get up again in the deep snow. Attaching the second foot in standing is another challenge to ones balance. While maintaining static balance on the one attached foot, you must stabilize your center of balance and move your second foot into place. Remember, all this strapping in takes place on a slippery hill. Thankfully, I have been practicing my balance exercise routine with the Exercise For Balance DVD and have been able to advance my balance abilities to successfully manage the balance challenges necessary to go snowboarding.

Basic Balance Training And Postural Alignment

Balance Training Helps Posture

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com

Balance training and  balance exercises are a great way to advance balance and facilitate balance reactions in the lower legs, specifically at the ankles and feet. Stability exercises have been demonstrated to show an advancement in leg strength as well. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Additionally, remember how your mom always told you to stand up straight? Well, it makes a different in your balance abilities as you get older.  Specific balance training has recently been studied to see if it enhances overall postural alignment, especially in the elderly population that struggles with osteoporosis and back pain.

Balance Training For Good Posture

Balance training and balance exercises and their influence on posture was recently investigated by medical researchers, O’Brien K., Culham E. and Pickles B. in their study, Balance and skeletal alignment in a group of elderly female fallers and nonfallers , they  looked at the synergy between balance training, balance abilities and posture. The purpose of this study was to determine whether sagittal plane posture differed between fallers and nonfallers and to explore the relationship between skeletal alignment and balance in elderly females. Spinal posture was measured in standing using an inclinometer, and lower extremity joint angles were assessed in standing using a universal goniometer. The Berg Balance Scale, the Functional Reach Test, and a modified Timed Get Up and Go Test were used to measure balance. Results suggest that knee joint angle was significantly greater in fallers compared to nonfallers. Significant, but low, correlations were found between the inclination of the upper thoracic spine and all three balance measures. Lower thoracic slope and knee joint angle in standing were also weakly related to two of the three balance measures. This study supports the hypothesis that a significant but weak relationship exists between balance and skeletal alignment in elderly females.

Athletes Need Balance Exercises And Balance Training Too

Balance Exercises And Balance Training For Athletes

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/

Balance exercises are an important part of every athlete’s workout. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  We can learn from the horrific fall that Lindsey Vonn, US Olympic and World Champion Skier, took last week that falling can produce significant injuries, not only for older adults but also for athletes. In the elderly population, a fall can result in breaking bones, like a hip or wrist fracture. Falls in the senior citizen age range can be debilitating and lead to loss of mobility, loss of independence, loss of quality of life and financial hardship as well. Many times, when an athlete experiences a fall, it can be season ending or career ending. The status of Lindsey Vonn’s return for the Olympics in 2014 is unknowable at this time. Here is a report of her fall:

Vonn tears ligaments in right knee, out for season

balance exercises

SCHLADMING, Austria (AP) — The U.S. Ski Team says Lindsey Vonn has torn the ACL and MCL in her right knee and also has a broken bone after a horrific crash Tuesday at the world championships.

The team says Vonn will undergo surgery and will miss the rest of this season but is expected to return in time for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The team says Vonn has “a torn ACL and MCL in her right knee and a lateral tibial plateau fracture.”

Vonn, of Vail, Colo., lost her balance on her right leg while landing a jump, flipped over in the air and landed on her backside as she smashed through a gate before coming to a halt.

The four-time overall World Cup winner and 2010 Olympic downhill champion received medical treatment on the slope for 12 minutes before being taken by helicopter to a hospital in Schladming.
