Be Safe With Balance Exercises This 4th Of July

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via exercises

The Fourth of July is upon us and it is time to show off your balance exercises and balance techniques at the various celebration events. The Fourth of July is a wonderful time of the year with all the fun activities of the day. Those celebratory events, however, can often be very challenging to ones balance abilities. Some of the 4th of July events that I look forward to include challenging settings like:
-Walking on thick grass at a picnic
-Walking while holding a plate of barbecue yummy’s
-Standing at, walking to or marching in a parade
-Looking to enjoy the fireworks
All these activities and challenge your steadiness and create an unfortunate opportunity for a fall. Walking on thick grass it is difficult because of the uneven surface. Walking while holding a plate of food is challenging secondary to dividing your attention to holding the plate steady so as to not drop the food, while also trying to walk without losing your balance at the same time. Additionally, maneuvering through crowds at a parade or concert is equally difficult, in order to keep from being jostled and pushed over. Finally, many times when we look up to enjoy the fireworks we can easily lose our balance and fall backwards.

By practicing balance exercises ahead of time, you will be able to enjoy the full extent of celebration this Fourth of July. Standing equilibrium exercises where you put one foot in front of the other helps to develop strong balance reactions at the ankles, which is necessary for walking on the grass and uneven surfaces. Stability exercises where you focus on the sense of touch between your feet and the floor will help ground you and increase your steadiness in an environment where there are a lot of people who could bump into you. Additionally, there are specific balance techniques that help you to steady your body weight in the middle of your feet, which will help keep you from falling backwards while you look up and enjoy the fireworks. You can practice these balance exercises and balance techniques in the convenience of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD, which was developed by a fun loving and active Physical Therapist who hopes that you will enjoy this year’s Fourth of July celebration.
