Just for fun, lets practice our senior balance exercises to Elvis Presley’s tune, “Return To Sender.” Since Elvis was such a talented forerunner of combining singing and dancing, we should emulate a little of his “style” during our balance exercise program today. Elvis had a magical way of pulling off amazing dance moves and balancing acts, while singing his wonderful musical numbers. He could simultaneously swing his hips, bend his knees, pump his ankles and throw his arms– all without falling off-balance. He was the master of controlled weight shifting. Even with all his gyrations, he was able to “return to center” and not lose his balance. One of the keys to good balance is keeping one’s body weight centered in the mid-point of their feet. Senior Balance Exercises– Elvis Style
In honor of Elvis, we can try practicing senior balance exercises to control weight shifting during different movement activities. First, we can start with shifting our body mass side to side and from one foot to the other with the feet shoulder width apart in standing. Next, we can try shifting the body weight from the toes to the heels, slowly and with good control. This anterior to posterior weight shifting is essential to master to keep you from falling either forwards or backwards. In weeks and months ahead, you can progress your weight shifting exercise to add knee bends and ankle pumps, just like Elvis– if you can.
