Dynamic senior balance exercises that include focusing on walking activities can help enhance an older individual’s stability during walking activities.  Unfortunately, far too many aging adults fall into an arhythmic walking pattern.  This faulty movement pattern includes:
-decreased step length
– decreased amplitude of arm swing
-uneven cadence of striding
-poor arm-leg synergy
-uneven swing-to-stance ratio
This arhythmic gait pattern often times leads to decreased balance and increased risk and incidence of falling.  The best way to combat this off- balance walking pattern is to begin with static senior balance exercises and progress to dynamic routines.  By developing good static balance with all standing activities using specific stability techniques and well designed balance exercises, seniors are able to develop strong balance reactions at the ankles, which secondarily decrease the risk for falling.  Once good static balance is established, then the older adults can practice dynamic stability routines which include walking with better gait patterns and walking while concentrating on the sense of touch between the feet and the floor to enhance the sensory input to the balance center in the brain.  By using the sensory input from your feet while walking, you will be able to maximize your balance abilities and decrease the incidence of falling.  You also be able to improve your gait pattern to a more rhythmic walking pattern, which is more energy efficient as well as more stable.  You can practice these senior balance exercises and stability strategies that have been developed by an experienced physical therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
