Additionally, approximately 40% of migraine patients have some accompanying vestibular syndrome involving disruption in their balance and/or dizziness at one time or another. The clinical presentation of vestibular symptoms that often correlate with migraine3 includes—but is not limited to—dizziness; motion intolerance with respect to head, eyes, and/or body; spontaneous vertigo attacks (often accompanied by nausea and vomiting); diminished eye focus with photosensitivity; sound sensitivity and tinnitus; balance loss and ataxia; cervicalgia (neck pain) with associated muscle spasms in the upper cervical spine musculature; confusion with altered cognition; spatial disorientation; and anxiety/panic. The symptoms of imbalance can be eased by practicing balance exercises every day.

An ongoing routine of balance exercises can help minimize symptoms of disequilibrium for those times when a migraine hits. People who experience migraines typically have symptoms of vertigo, nausea and imbalance. Consequently, strengthening your balance abilities before the next migraine comes is essential. The first step is to become proficient at using the sense of touch from your feet and the floor. You can learn this by standing with your feet shoulder width a part and centering your body weight in the middle of your arches. Next, you can concentrate on keeping your body weight centered and think about the sense of touch from your feet to the ground. By doing this exercise, you will develop a strong connection between your sensory input and your balance center in your brain. You can also start with basic equilibrium routines like standing on one foot, which will strengthen and speed your balance reactions at your feet and ankles.
