Senior balance exercises are one of the main variables that help to improve balance and prevent falls among older individuals. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Scientists have been studying the genetic make up and environmental influences on folks over the age of one hundred and a new subset of participants– the “wellderly”. In his article, Stevan Hall writes about the group of subjects known as the “wellderly” who include people over the age of eighty who continue to be healthy, active, have no chronic diseases, no high blood pressure, no cardiovascular disease, no diabetes and no reliance on prescription medication. Rae Kline, an eighty-three year old woman, fits the model of the wellderly. Kline lives in California and was an early advocate of Yoga. She describes herself as a “perpetual motion machine” as she details her daily routine of swimming one mile, biking one hour and walking four miles on the beach.

Senior Balance Exercises For The Long Run

Senior balance exercises are an essential part of staying active and healthy in our later years. The benefits of performing stability exercises have been investigated by Rocee Holtzer, a neuropsychologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Holtzer has been studying the connection between brain function and mobility in the elderly. Through his studies, Holtzer has discovered that the amount of thinking people are able to accomplish, engaging the prefrontal part of the brain, while they walk and talk will help to predict the individuals risk for dementia, their loss of mobility and their increased risk of falling. holtzer’s research reinforces other studies that have shown that adding cognitive tasks to equilibrium routines makes the exercise more difficult and a greater challenge to the person’s balance. With these and other studies in mind, healthcare professionals, physical therapists and doctors highly recommend that their senior patients continue with balance exercises throughout their lives. Now, seniors can practice a daily balance routine in the comfort of their own home with the Exercise For Balance dvd.

Balance exercises can help not only athletes, seniors, people with orthopedic conditions but also individuals with Lymphedema. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Lymphedema is a painful and debilitating condition that includes swelling of an extremity. Lymphedema most often occurs when lymphatic fluid accumulates in the soft tissue structures in the arm or leg. Lymphedema typically occurs after surgery or radiation, especially following cancer treatments. Statistics reveal that Lymphedema effects 2.5 million individuals in the United States. Cancer patients and cancer survivors are the largest group of individuals with Lymphedema. The cure for Lymphedema is unknown, but there are approaches that help to manage the symptoms. Lymphedema is caused by a blockage in your lymphatic system, an important part of your immune and circulatory systems. The blockage prevents lymph fluid from draining well, and as the fluid builds up, the swelling continues. Lymphedema is most commonly caused by the removal of or damage to your lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment. The lymphatic system includes lymph nodes that serve to filter the lymph and remove waste, after which the lymph enters the bloodstream. If the lymph nodes or vessels are damaged secondary to surgery or radiation, lymphatic fluid may accumulate in the surrounding tissues, which results in the swelling, discomfort, loss of function, loss of mobility and balance problems. Additional symptoms of Lymphedema include:

Swelling of part of your arm or leg or your entire arm or leg, including your fingers or toes

A feeling of heaviness or tightness in your arm or leg

Restricted range of motion in your arm or leg

Aching or discomfort in your arm or leg

Recurring infections in your affected limb

Hardening and thickening of the skin on your arm or leg

Difficulties with using the limb which can lead to problems with dressing, grooming, walking, balance

Balance exercises are a necessary component of daily living for seniors in their 60s and above as well as individuals to complain of medical issues or musculoskeletal pain. One common pain syndrome that affects millions of people is the experience of having painful heels. Pain in the heel can occur secondary to a bone spur or at the attachment site of plantar fascia on the calcaneus bone. Pain in the heel is the most common rear foot problem. Heel pain can be a result of cumulative repetitive impact forces at the heel strike phase of walking. Additionally, heel pain can be seen with prolonged weight-bearing, which is very common with jobs that require individuals to be on their feet most of the day. Other considerations that affect heel pain include obesity and atrophy of the fat pad at the heel. When a person experiences heel pain, they tend to shift their body weight off the painful area and their heel, which results in changing their balance point and increasing their risk for falling. There are several considerations to help reduce heel pain and improve balance. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises For Those Painful Heels

Balance exercises are important to do every day for individuals who suffer with heel pain to help them improve balance abilities and decrease their risk for falling. With specific balance training, the person with heel pain can learn how to center their body weight in their arches and off their painful heel bone. By maintaining a person’s body weight in their arches, they will have better control of their weight shifting and subsequent ankle reactions that are needed for good stability. Additionally, by practicing equilibrium exercises every day a person with heel pain can help to enhance their strength in their feet and lower legs, which is also beneficial for maximizing steadiness with all standing and walking activities. Orthotics and shoe management can also benefit those individuals who suffer with painful heels, which leads to poor balance abilities. Padded orthotics help to increase shock absorption and improve contact at the calcaneus heel bone. Furthermore, using orthotics in the shoe helps to improve comfort as well as enhance the efficiency of the foot during the push off phase of walking, which decreases the fatigue in the muscles. By combining orthotics, supportive shoes and stability exercises, an individual can advance their comfort and balance abilities by a large percentage. Now, you can practice specific balance techniques that train you how to shift your body weight into your arches as well as appropriate balance routines developed by an experienced Physical Therapist with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

To be more specific, the neurotransmitter, Dopamine, is manufactured in a deep region of the brain called the substantia nigra. The job of Dopamine is to stimulate the cells in the basal ganglia area of the brain that ultimately controls movement. In individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, the cells in the substantia nigra unexpectantaly and prematurely die, resulting in a reduction of available Dopamine. Parkinsonism is the official name for the collection of common symptoms that include tremor, stiffness, forward bent posturing, slowness of movement, unsteady gait and balance problems. As a result, people with Parkinson’s suffer from movement disorders including difficulties with

Balance Exercises To Improve Safety

Balance exercises should be practiced on a daily basis for those folks with Parkinson’s Disease. Since a fall can lead to fractures and head injuries, falling is one of the most dangerous complications of Parkinson’s Disease. to improve safety, individuals with Parkinson’s Disease should be educated on the risks of falling as well as specific techniques for getting up from a chair, walking, and stair climbing. Patients with Parkinson’s should also be informed that a common side effect of Levodopa, the medication usually prescribed to those with Parkinson’s Disease, is dizziness upon rising, secondary to the drop in blood pressure. Specific balance strategies can include getting up from a chair and taking a minute to center their balance, allowing the dizziness to subside. These balance techniques and other stability exercises can be practiced in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance exercises can be beneficial to a wide range of individuals from athletes who want to better their performance, seniors who want to improve their stability and limit the risk of falling to folks who suffer with medical conditions. One medical condition that can benefit from equilibrium exercises is Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The medical community has described Osteogenesis Imperfecta as a genetic disorder that is characterized by having bones that break easily, often with little trauma or no apparent cause. Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a highly variable disease and it has signs and symptoms that range along a continuum from mild to severe. People with Osteogenesis Imperfecta not only get fractures, but they also experience

-muscle weakness,

-joint laxity

-skeletal problems

-balance deficits

These issues often lead to difficulties with motor skills, movement activities and daily function. Consequently, steadiness routines are essential for folks with Osteogenesis Imperfecta to practice on a daily basis.

Senior Balance Exercises Enhance Walking Rhythm

Dynamic senior balance exercises that include focusing on walking activities can help enhance an older individual’s stability during walking activities. Unfortunately, far too many aging adults fall into an arhythmic walking pattern. This faulty movement pattern includes:

-decreased step length

- decreased amplitude of arm swing

-uneven cadence of striding

-poor arm-leg synergy

-uneven swing-to-stance ratio

This arhythmic gait pattern often times leads to decreased balance and increased risk and incidence of falling. The best way to combat this off- balance walking pattern is to begin with static senior balance exercises and progress to dynamic routines. By developing good static balance with all standing activities using specific stability techniques and well designed balance exercises, seniors are able to develop strong balance reactions at the ankles, which secondarily decrease the risk for falling. Once good static balance is established, then the older adults can practice dynamic stability routines which include walking with better gait patterns and walking while concentrating on the sense of touch between the feet and the floor to enhance the sensory input to the balance center in the brain. By using the sensory input from your feet while walking, you will be able to maximize your balance abilities and decrease the incidence of falling. You also be able to improve your gait pattern to a more rhythmic walking pattern, which is more energy efficient as well as more stable. You can practice these senior balance exercises and stability strategies that have been developed by an experienced physical therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises are essential to perform on a daily basis for those individuals over sixty years old and for anyone who is experiencing changes in their feet. Our stability comes from our feet when we are standing and walking. Our feet play an enormous role in providing sensory input to the balance system in our brain, which is used to determine what kind of surface we are walking on, how high to step up on a curb or step and many other various bits of information. For many of us, as we get along in years, we also experience foot pain on a regular basis. Since our environment has changed over the decades to walking on hard surfaces like cement, hardwood floors, tile, we tend to have more and more foot pain as we go through life. Additionally, foot wear is a big contributor to foot pain. Foot wear can include high heels or flip-flops, which both lead to plantar fascia pain, bunions, heels spurs and general foot pain. Furthermore, for those folks with medical conditions like Diabetes, Peripheral Neuropathy and Sciatica, they can also have foot pain from their medical issues. Lastly, foot pain, which leads to balance problems, can come from general aging patterns like:

-Loss of Type II fast twitch fibers in the muscles in the foot

-Decreased ability to adjust to changes in the surface of the ground like rug or curb heights, grass

-Lower speeds of muscle firing to adjust to uneven surfaces

-Greater number of deformities in the toes, mid foot, rear foot

All of these changes in the aging foot can lead to decreased balance abilities and a greater risk for falling.

Senior Balance Exercises To Compensate For Changes In The Foot

Practicing senior balance exercises every day can help compensate for the changes in the foot that are seen with aging. Performing equilibrium exercises can help to build the balance reactions in the feet and ankles to the best of their ability. Stability exercises also enhance leg strength and the brain-body connection that is needed for good steadiness. You can advance balance routines by standing on uneven or soft surfaces to assist in maximizing the firing rate of foot muscles to correct body position during changes in the body’s center alignment. Now, for your convenience, you can practice these senior balance exercises and specific balance strategies at home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Practicing senior balance exercises are an effective way to improve balance and minimize the risk in incidence of falling for those in the aging population. Additionally, stability exercises have many other benefits, which include improving posture and mobility. Healthcare workers and medical professionals understand that as individuals age they tend to adopt an increasing forward bent posture which increases their thoracic spine curve and shifts their center mass forward, resulting in a greater incidence of falling forward and sustaining wrist and shoulder fractures. Recently, medical researchers have studied the influence of this forward bent posture and increased kyphotic curve in the thoracic spine on balance abilities and general mobility. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Senior Balance Exercises Effect Posture And Mobility

Senior balance exercises are not only an important component of improving balance and preventing fun, but they can also be FUN! Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Do you remember the popular game of TAG that we used to play as kids? Tag is a lively game played on the playground, backyard and even times on an empty neighborhood street, that involves one or more players chasing other players in an attempt to “tag” or touch them, usually with their hand. In the game of Tag, the player who is selected to be “it” then chases the others, attempting to get close enough to tag them—touching them with a hand—while the others try to escape. When one player is touched, that makes the tagged player “it” – in some variations, the previous “it” is no longer “it” and the game can continue indefinitely, while in others, both players remain “it” and the game ends when all players have become “it”.

Fun Senior Balance Exercises

Senior balance exercises can be fun, reminding of us of great play times with brothers, sisters, cousins and neighbors from times long ago. For instance, if we remember the game of Tag, we can remember who sharp our balance abilities were in our youth. The most important aspect of the game of Tag is that it is fun and it promoted movement. While engaging in Tag, players run full speed, stop, start, change directions, duck weave and make all sorts of movements to avoid being tagged. The game of Tag demonstrated exceptional balance skills that need to be dusted off in our later years. For those folks sixty years and older, we may not be up to a full speed game of Tag, but we could improve our stability with appropriate senior balance exercises. You can practice appropriate balance techniques and equilibrium exercises in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Practicing senior balance exercises before heading off on a trip is imperative. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Next year thousands of people are expected to visit the major World War I battlefields in France and Belgium due to the one hundred year anniversary. A great idea is to begin performing stability exercises now to prepare for the challenging walking tours on grassy battlefields and cemeteries, cobblestone streets and various Gothic cathedrals. By practicing equilibrium routines ahead of time and improving your stability now, you will be able to be more confident with walking and be able to focus on the beautiful surroundings in the Western Front region. The Somme region is known for its sloping fields, woods and quaint villages, as well as the site of enormous loss of life for the Germans, French and British soldiers. Consequently, with over 600,000 lives lost there are several graveyards and memorials in the area, honoring fallen soldiers from many different nations.
