To be more specific, the neurotransmitter, Dopamine, is manufactured in a deep region of the brain called the substantia nigra. The job of Dopamine is to stimulate the cells in the basal ganglia area of the brain that ultimately controls movement. In individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, the cells in the substantia nigra unexpectantaly and prematurely die, resulting in a reduction of available Dopamine. Parkinsonism is the official name for the collection of common symptoms that include tremor, stiffness, forward bent posturing, slowness of movement, unsteady gait and balance problems.  As a result, people with Parkinson’s suffer from movement disorders including difficulties with

-climbing stairs
-activities of daily living

Specific balance strategies can include getting up from a chair and taking a minute to center their balance, allowing the dizziness to subside.
