Senior Balance Exercises For Better Stability

Healthcare professionals and medical researchers are studying varying aspects of aging including gene therapy, fitness training and senior balance exercise programs to help older folks avoid falls and the injuries that occur with falling. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have been looking into the influence of genes on issues of senior citizens including greater quality of life, longer lifespan and increased activity level including better balance and mobility. There is a common thought that you need good genes to live longer. In fact, genes are only part of the equation for most of us, says Dr. Thomas Perls, an aging expert and director of the New England Centenarian Study at the Boston University School of Medicine. “Research shows that genes account for less than one-third of your chances of surviving to age 85. The vast majority of variation in how old we live to be is due to our health behaviors,” Perls says. “Our genes could get most of us close to the remarkable age of 90 if we lead a healthy lifestyle.” The influence of genes is stronger, though, for people who live to older ages, such as beyond ninety-five years old. Perls has been studying people who live to age 100 and up (centenarians) and their families to learn more about the biological, psychological, and social factors that promote healthy aging.  “It seems there’s not a single gene that imparts a strong effect on the ability to get to these older ages,” Perls says. “Instead, it’s the combined effects of probably hundreds of genes, each with weak effects individually, but having the right combination can lead to a very strong effect, especially for living to the oldest ages we study.” “People used to say, ‘the older you get the sicker you get.’  But with common sense, healthy habits such as regular exercise, a healthy weight, avoiding red meat, not smoking, and managing stress, it can be ‘the older you get, the healthier you’ve been,’” Perls says. The key to healthy aging is to engage fully in life—mentally, physically, and socially.  “Transitioning to older years isn’t about sitting in a rocking chair and letting the days slip by,” Bernard says. “Older adults have unique experiences, intellectual capital, and emotional involvement that can be shared with younger generations. ” In addition, those people in the aging population can stay mobile and active in later years by participating in fitness programs that include senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Improved Stability

Having a good genetic make up is an important key to enhance your overall health in later years, but partaking in a daily fitness program as well as rehearsing certain senior balance exercises will also help to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.  Daily equilibrium routines can be performed in the comfort and convenience of your own home which provides the opportunity to perform stability exercises as part of a regular fitness program. As an example, you can practice tandem stance routines. A tandem stance steadiness exercise involves standing with one foot directly behind the other foot along a line. In this narrow base of support you will challenge your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. As your balance reactions get faster and stronger you will secondarily improve your overall steadiness with all standing and walking activities. You can practice tandem standing routines as well as other senior balance exercises by following the instruction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.
