The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall on Wednesday of 500,000 hoverboardstwo-wheeled self-balancing motorized devices — manufactured by 10 separate companies for fire hazards. The recall follows the agency’s investigation of more than 60 hoverboard-related fires causing $2 million worth of property damage. “All of the hoverboard models included in this recall were made with fundamental design flaws that put real people at real risk.” Hoverboards are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat and catch fire if they are improperly charged or installed. Most public places, including airlines, sporting arenas, public transportation and college campuses, have banned hoverboards because of fire risk. The devices also pose a physical risk if riders lose their balance. In December, a London teenager died when he fell off his hoverboard into the path of an oncoming bus, according to U.K. reports. So far, hoverboards have caused countless injuries for their riders due to their unstable nature and the high incidence of people falling off. Hoverboards do not have any way to provide upper extremity support. Hoverboards operate with sudden stops and starts that throw the riders off balance and to the ground. even if riders practice balance exercises, they can still fall off and hurt themselves.
